Dual Credit
Starting college can be overwhelming. What if we told you, however, that there is a better way to prepare? At Legacy Preparatory Charter Academy your scholar has the opportunity to start to earning college credit as early as their freshman year. Dual credit classes are not pre-college or preparatory courses – they are college level courses that are just as rigorous as those offered on a university campus. The courses your scholar takes can help them graduate from high school and count as college courses that will appear on their university transcript once they begin their undergraduate studies.
Dual credit is a process through which a student may earn high school credit for successfully completing a college course that provides advanced academic instruction beyond, or in greater depth than, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for a corresponding high school course. The “dual credit” earned is college credit and high school credit for one course.
Legacy Preparatory Charter Academy will be working with Collin College and Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) to provide our scholars with the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school. Scholars that are taking advantage of this opportunity will have to apply through the colleges for admission and take the TSI assessment. They will work with either a professor from the college online or a Legacy Faculty member who has met the criteria to become an adjunct professor through the college to complete these courses.
While scholars will have the opportunity to earn Dual Credit as early as their Ninth Grade year, they may choose to opt into the program at any time. All Dual Credit courses will be weighted on the scholar’s high school transcript on a 5.0 scale. All Dual Credit Courses will be on the scholar’s college transcript. These credits will transfer to the college he/she chooses to attend after high school graduation. All Dual Credit courses are free for the student to take within the regular school year.
What Are Dual Credit Courses?
Dual Credit courses are offered in a variety of subject areas including math, science, English, economics, history, government and a wide variety of technical courses.
Dual Credit courses are taught either at the college or at the high school. Courses are taught by college faculty or by qualified high school instructors who meet the same criteria as college faculty.
If you are interested in a Dual Credit course, check with your high school counselor for a complete list of available courses. Dual Credit academic courses are transferable to all Texas public colleges and universities and to some private and out-of-state institutions.

Who Can Enroll?
To participate in the Dual Credit program, you must:
- Be enrolled in good standing in 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade of a participating high school, private, charter or home school.
- Have approval from a high school counselor.
- Fulfill appropriate admissions criteria to the college.
- Meet minimum test scores.
