What Your Scholar Should Be Eating for Lunch

With childhood obesity and associated health problems at an all-time high, kids’ lunches have become a hot topic of conversation. Healthy lunches can not only help kids avoid weight-related health problems, but they can also give kids the energy they need to make it through a day at their prep school. For parents, however, healthy lunch ideas are not always easy to come by, and figuring out what actually goes into a healthy lunch is the first challenge. If you’re committed to making lunchtime healthier for your student but aren’t sure where to begin, these tips will help.

Lean Proteins

Lean proteins should be the foundation of every lunch you pack for your child. Think of lean types of meat, like turkey or chicken, as well as low-fat cheeses, Greek yogurt, and hummus. Protein will help your child feel full and satisfied for the rest of the school day. Sandwiches are a great way to include protein in lunch, but don’t be afraid to think outside of the box. Meat and veggie roll-ups, cubed chicken, and other protein preparations make ideal alternatives to the standard sandwich.

Complex Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates will give your student the spark of energy he or she needs for project-based learning tasks and other school activities, but be sure to choose whole-grain, complex carbohydrates rather than simple carbs that are filled with sugar. Sugar will give your student a burst of energy and then a crash right around the last period of the day. Whole-grain breads, brown rice, and whole-grain pasta are all good options for lunchtime complex carbs.

The best drink for your child to have with lunch is water. Fruit juices, sports drinks, and sodas are loaded with sugar and extra calories. Adding some fresh fruit slices to the water can add the flavor your child craves without the calories.
