Dear Legacy Families,

Here we are beginning our fifth year and so much has happened during the years leading up to now. We started out in three church locations in Mesquite, Dallas and Richardson and now are in our own buildings in Mesquite and Plano. We opened Texas’ largest charter (at that time) with 800 scholars and we anticipate beginning this new school year with up to 1450 between all three locations!

Our instructional programs have gotten more sophisticated, as we continue our STEM and engineering projects starting in Kindergarten. We are adding Chinese to the K – 5 th as a third language, with an emphasis on helping scholars understand their place in our global society. We are expanding our guided reading program to include upper grades as needed and we ask that reading be a priority in your home as well.

Our dual credit has expanded due to the changes allowed from the last legislative session. We are giving 9 th graders the opportunity to take some college courses if they have shown they are up to doing so. Our new motto for our elementary scholars is, “We are preparing you for 9 th grade college!”. This is a very exciting time to be in a Texas public school setting. Imagine being able to get college credit for free in high school for any child who shows s/he is ready! Think of the long term savings for your family!

We have changed the campus leadership model so it will allow each director to have fewer grades to oversee. Our goal is to free the directors up enough to have them go into classrooms and facilitator planning sessions more frequently so their expertise can support the instructional growth of their staff. I have asked for them to have a weekly schedule to follow which we ask for parents to honor. They will not be available during certain times as they follow their schedule, but will also schedule parent contact time as needed.

BOARD OF EDUCATION

The Legacy Preparatory Charter Academy Board of Education Members are:

Chair / President - Byron Ricks

Byron is a multi-certified corporate trainer and published author with more than fifteen years of consulting, training and leadership experience. Byron is skilled in performance management, facilitating diverse learning, and building productive relationships with clients and staff. He is an energetic leader with excellent team development, emotional intelligence and conflict management skills and has the ability to evaluate business processes; troubleshoot to isolate the cause(s) of human performance gaps and/or organizational needs. He has experience in forecasting workforce requirements, establishing/redesigning organizations, and influencing/leading the work of individuals and groups in change initiatives. He has lead seamless implementations and delivered next-generation assessment solutions that assist in improving revenues, margins and workplace productivity.

His professional background includes positions as public affairs manager, regional academic coordinator, and director of administrative services in higher education. He is an entrepreneur with experience in management, human resources, sales and marketing, and has participated on leadership teams responsible for implementing performance management standards, recruitment, interviewing, and staff development. He has served on numerous boards and committees as public affairs manager for the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce. He currently serves as President and Chairman of the Board for Legacy Preparatory Charter School District, serving the Dallas, Mesquite and Plano communities.

Byron has a BBA with emphases in Marketing and Real Estate, and a Master of Arts in Human Behavior from National University San Diego, California. He has received accreditation from Development Dimensions International (certified facilitator), Ball State University, Indiana (certified trainer), Accelerated Learning, American Society for Training and Development (ASTD), American Management Association (Train the Trainer), and National University-San Diego, Proactive Employee Selection & Retention and Performance Management.

Byron is the owner and administrator of the Comfort Keepers Franchise in Frisco, Texas that serves Collin, Denton and Dallas Counties.

Secretary - John Ting

John Ting is a North Texas native who received his Juris Doctorate from The City University of New York School of Law. John is a licensed attorney with a full-service law firm focused on helping his clients, from individuals to small and large companies, to achieve their goals. In addition to his law firm, John is actively involved in the community, having served over 200 hours supporting underserved populations with their causes. He is also co-founder of Bobaddiction, a Taiwanese food truck that serves boba tea and shaved snow in the DFW metroplex. Since the opening of his law firm, John has accumulated more than 500 hours of pro bono legal services.

Treasurer - Marc Desgraves

Marc P. Desgraves, IV is a Texas Certified Public Accountant in good standing with over fifteen years of experience including tax preparation, mergers & acquisitions, business formation consulting, Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, risk assessment, forensic accounting, corporate accounting, internal audit, and big four external audit. Mr. Desgraves has a diversified background with accounting or audit experience in industries such as Energy, Airlines, Financial Services, Publishing, Software, and Retail. As an independent tax professional, Mr. Desgraves has performed tax preparation and start-up services for over ten years for a diversified group of individual and business clients who own such businesses as youth sports development, fitness clubs, salon services, marketing firms and software sales. Mr. Desgraves has also provided numerous tax services on a pro bono basis since starting his practice to help foster the growth of small businesses.

Member - Megan Bauer

Megan Bauer

Ms. Bauer has been a licensed attorney in good standing with the State Bar of Texas since November 2004. She graduated cum laude from the Texas Tech School of Law in 2004 and has been a public servant throughout her career. Ms. Bauer began her career in the Honors Program at the IRS where she was ultimately promoted to Senior Attorney. Then, in 2011, she began working for the Department of Health and Human Services as an Assistant Regional Counsel. Ms. Bauer also is the director of a non-profit, meditation center and has held that position since January 2012.

Member - Dr. Diana Madrigal Hopes

Dr. Diana Madrigal Hopes

Dr. Diana Madrigal Hopes, Fulbright Scholar (2013-2014), has over 15 years of experience as an administrator and educational consultant in PK-16 educational settings in the United States and abroad. She has worked with school administrators, teachers, parents, students, faculty in higher education as well as government, community, and business leaders in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating bilingual, English as a second language, dual language and foreign language programs. Dr. Madrigal Hopes has taught at Southern Methodist University (SMU), University of North Texas (UNT), and Texas A&M University-Commerce. She has chaired and served in numerous advisory committees aimed at improving second language programmatic practices for effective teaching and learning. She holds a Masters in Bilingual Education from Southern Methodist University and a doctorate in Supervision, Curriculum, and Instruction from Texas A&M University-Commerce.
